MEDFORD, OR (FEBRUARY 18, 2020) – Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) and its Local 609 today filed unfair labor practice charges against NPL, a Medford-area utility construction company that performs work for the utility company, Avista. The following is a statement from UWUA President Jim Slevin:
“NPL’s retaliatory actions against a union official for his involvement in contract negotiations are unacceptable and illegal. The company’s changes to terms and conditions of employment undermine ongoing negotiations for a new contract and violate federal labor law. The company must do better.
“We’re hopeful that as we prepare to enter mediation in the coming days, NPL comes to the table in good-faith with solutions on improving safety, wages and benefits – not more excuses.”
Chartered in 1945, the Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA), AFL-CIO represents 50,000 active members employed in America’s utility sectors including the electric, gas, water, and related professional and service industries. James Slevin is UWUA’s National President. For more information visit https://uwua.net.
