On May 8th, the Michigan State Utility Workers Council (MSUWC) teamed up with Consumers Energy to hold a unique Workers Memorial Day event at the company’s Michigan Service Center in Traverse City. Attendees commemorated the 208 workers who have lost their lives on the job since 1917.
MSUWC Vice President of Safety, Les Wutka, spoke on the importance of remembering those we’ve lost, and honored them by committing to build a culture of safety and continuous learning.
MSUWC Local 247 President, Josh McTaggart, introduced the families of three deceased members: Jim Farrington, Jeff Creel, and Jamie Rus. After the introductions, all 208 names were read aloud in commemoration, then attendees were invited to view the memorial wall up close.
The wall will spend the next two years traveling throughout Consumers Energy service territory, allowing employees at each location and opportunity to hold their own ceremonies.
Representatives from Consumers Energy also announced that henceforth, May 8th will mark the annual Consumers/MSUWC Worker Memorial Day.
