YOUNG WORKERS INITIATIVE COMMITTEE: Recognizing the Next Generation of Leaders

Reggie Davis, Chair

The UWUA Young Workers Initiative is about much more than the members who serve on the National Young Workers Initiative Committee (YWIC). At its core, it is about harnessing the energy, talent, and potential of young workers across our union — and helping to guide that energy into meaningful roles in activism, leadership, and service.

That mission is driving a new focus for the YWIC: recognizing and highlighting the outstanding work being done by young members throughout the country. Every day, young workers in the UWUA are stepping up — on the job, in their locals, and in their communities. Some are leading organizing efforts, others are volunteering their time to support community initiatives, and many are pursuing academic and professional growth that strengthens both themselves and our union.

Too often, that work goes unnoticed beyond the local level. We want to change that.

Through our quarterly column in The Utility Worker and across UWUA social media platforms, the YWIC will spotlight young members who are making a difference. The goal is simple: to recognize their efforts, celebrate their accomplishments, and encourage continued engagement.

Recognition matters. While a good deed may be its own reward, acknowledgment can inspire others to step forward. When young workers see their peers getting involved, leading, and making an impact, it reinforces the idea that there is a place for them in this union — and that their contributions matter.

This initiative is also about building stronger connections among young workers and fostering a culture of participation. By highlighting these stories, we hope to encourage the growth of young worker groups within locals and increase overall engagement across the UWUA.

We invite local leaders to be part of this effort. If you have a young member who is making a difference — whether through union work, community involvement, or academic achievement — we want to hear about them. Please share nominations and stories with us at reggiedavis@uwua.net so we can recognize and celebrate their contributions.

Together, we can ensure that the energy and commitment of our young workers continue to strengthen the UWUA for years to come.
