HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE: Spring Into Action: Labor, Democracy, and Our Human Rights

Lee Herbert, Local 601

In recent months, there has been renewed energy for action across the UWUA. In New Jersey, members of UWUA Local 601 demonstrated what it means for labor to play an active role in protecting democratic participation — an essential human right.

Earlier this spring, Local 601 answered the call from the New Jersey AFL-CIO to support a special election in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District. Union members put boots on the ground to help ensure that working families had a voice in selecting their next representative. The seat, vacated after the election of Governor Mikie Sherrill, presented a critical opportunity to shape leadership at a time when issues impacting workers remain front and center.

On April 16, 2026, that effort helped secure a victory for Analilia Mejia, a candidate with a strong background in labor advocacy and organizing. Her win reflects the power of collective action and the impact union members can have when they actively engage in the democratic process.

While this example comes from New Jersey, the lesson extends far beyond one local or one election. Across the country, union members play a vital role in safeguarding democracy. Participation in elections — whether through canvassing, educating voters, or mobilizing communities — is not just political activity; it is an expression of our shared human rights. The rights to vote, to organize, and to advocate for fair representation are deeply interconnected with the labor movement’s mission.

Labor unions have long been at the forefront of advancing these rights. By coming together, we amplify our voices and ensure that the needs of working people are heard. Every local, regardless of location, has the ability to engage in this work — supporting candidates who align with labor values, encouraging civic participation, and standing united in defense of our collective future.

As we move forward, let this be a reminder: our strength lies in solidarity, and our action is essential. When we show up, we protect not only our jobs and communities, but the democratic rights that make progress possible.

Solidarity forever!
