Since its launch last year, UWUA’s Adopt-a-School initiative — a joint effort of the Women’s Caucus and the Young Workers Initiative Committee (YWIC) — has continued to grow, with Local 132 expanding its reach and impact in Southern California.
Now in its second year, the program has moved beyond supply drives and career days to deeper engagement with students. Local 132 has added new partner schools — including both an elementary school and a high school — and introduced activities designed to build skills and confidence.

At Montclair High School, members participated in a mock interview program, where students presented resumes, answered questions, and received feedback. “It was very rewarding to see the outcome,” said Local 132 Women’s Chair Alexa Barraza, noting that students later shared how the experience helped them secure jobs.
The program has also expanded career exposure efforts. During recent events, members brought gas and water equipment — including meters — to give students a hands-on look at utility work. The addition of a young worker in the field has strengthened those efforts, offering students a real-world perspective.
Beyond career readiness, the initiative continues to focus on community connection. Members participated in Read Across America events at multiple elementary schools, reading to students and distributing books.
With support from union leadership and growing collaboration, organizers say the goal now is expansion — reaching more schools, communities, and students.
