In April, Chris Ericksen assumed leadership of the UWUA’s National Veterans Committee, bringing with him more than two decades of union experience and a deep commitment to veterans’ advocacy.
A Clevelander and 24-year member of UWUA Local 270, Ericksen currently serves as the local’s president — a position he has held for the past four years. Local 270 represents nearly 900 members working across water treatment, municipal services, energy delivery, and nuclear power. Ericksen’s dedication to the union is marked by time as the vice president, recording secretary, division recording secretary, and job steward. In 2021, he joined the National Executive Board.
His commitment to service began well before his union career. After working as a carpenter following high school, Ericksen enlisted in the U.S. Navy in search of new experiences and a steady paycheck. He served for four years — two of them at sea aboard the USS Nimitz and the remainder stationed in Newport News, Virginia.
After completing his military service, Ericksen began his career as a utility worker and quickly became active in union affairs. He has participated in the UWUA National Veterans Committee for several years. Following the recent retirement of former chair Rick Passarelli, Ericksen was asked to step into the leadership role.
The committee meets monthly and is composed of two representatives from each UWUA region, along with the chair. It focuses on advancing a legislative agenda and coordinating service projects in support of veterans.
With his combined military background and experience in union leadership, Ericksen is well-equipped to guide the National Veterans Committee in its ongoing mission to support and advocate for veterans throughout the utility workforce.
