Thomas A. Verba’s career is a testament to commitment, hard work, and union pride. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Verba joined the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. (CEI) in February 1952, just months after graduating high school. He began as a groundman and proudly became a member of UWUA Local 270.
Recently, Verba wrote a heartfelt letter to The Utility Worker, sharing highlights from his remarkable 73-year journey as a Local 270 member — and it certainly caught our attention.
Rising steadily through the ranks, Verba became an apprentice lineman, eventually retiring 39 years later as a lead lineman in charge of a three-man crew. His extensive experience included work on feeder and power gangs, steel tower climbing, and assignments on residential underground, power line, and trouble crews. He also answered calls for mutual aid in several major emergencies — from ice storms in the Midwest to Hurricane Gloria in Boston.
In 1953, Verba was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Korea as a Sergeant First Class, leading a 10-man platoon. After his return in 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Pearl. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary and now enjoy life in Tennessee with their five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Verba’s dedication to safety is unmatched — he worked more than 30 years without a single lost-time accident. His outstanding safety record earned him a role as safety committee coordinator, overseeing over 500,000 man-hours without incident across two service centers.
Now 92, Verba remains a proud union man. His legacy is a shining example of loyalty, leadership, and lifelong commitment to the values of the Utility Workers Union of America.
