YOUNG WORKERS INITIATIVE COMMITTEE: Young Workers: Your Union Needs
Your Energy and Ideas

Reggie Davis, Chair

The strength of any union lies not just in its numbers, but in the active engagement of its members — particularly its young workers. As the utility sector continues to evolve with new technologies and challenges, fresh perspectives and enthusiasm are more vital than ever.

Becoming an active union member starts with fundamental participation. Vote in union elections, respond to contract surveys, and attend local meetings. Your voice matters in shaping the future of your workplace. Consider taking the next step by becoming a union steward, where you can directly advocate for your coworkers and ensure workplace rights are protected.

The UWUA offers numerous opportunities for growth and leadership. National committees provide platforms to influence policy and drive innovation across the utility sector. Understanding our union’s history — available through resources at uwua.net — helps you appreciate the hard-fought battles that secured today’s workplace protections and benefits.

Starting in January, the Young Workers Initiative Committee will host regional meet-and-greets across all five UWUA regions, beginning with Region IV. These events aim to offer valuable opportunities to connect with National officers, executive board members, and fellow young workers from other locals. You’ll learn more about the union and discover ways to get involved. Watch for announcements from your local about the meeting in your region.

Political engagement extends our influence beyond the workplace. Every election, from local to national, impacts utility workers’ lives. Your vote is your voice in shaping policies that affect our industry, safety standards, and working conditions.

Community involvement strengthens union presence and public support. When your local seeks volunteers for community projects, step forward. These activities showcase union values and build crucial public relationships.

Perhaps most importantly, become a mentor. Share your experiences with younger individuals considering utility careers. Whether you work in water, gas, electric, or public works, your firsthand knowledge can inspire the next generation of utility workers. The sector offers stable, rewarding careers with competitive benefits — opportunities that many young job seekers may not know about.

Young workers bring essential energy and fresh ideas to our union. Your participation ensures that as our industry evolves, our union remains strong and relevant. The future of our union depends on engaged young members who understand both our proud history and our potential for growth. Your involvement today shapes the workplace of tomorrow.

Take that first step. Get involved. Your union needs you.
