UWUA awarded the 2024 scholarships this summer to five regional winners. Each recipient received $2,000 toward continuing their education.
Region I
Tyler Usler, a graduate of Exeter West Greenwich High School, played varsity hockey and graduated with honors. He is pursuing studies in electrical engineering at the Community College of Rhode Island. Tyler is the son of Erik and Kathleen Usler. His father is a lineman with Rhode Island Energy and a member of Local 152.
Region II
Makenzie Sing is a freshman at Carnegie Mellon University, majoring in ethics, history, and public policy. She is the daughter of Heather and Samuel Sing. Her mother, a member of Local 433, works at the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (Alcosan) as a processing group leader in customer service and billing. Makenzie was valedictorian and senior class president at Pittsburgh’s Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) magnet school, where she focused on ceramics and painting. During high school, she also worked as a student assistant at the Andy Warhol Museum, a role she plans to continue while attending college.
Region III
Alexa Grossholz, daughter of Kristi and Ben Grossholz, is attending the University of Akron, where she’ll explore her interests in criminology and criminal justice. Her mother is a member of Ohio Local G-555. Alexa is a Mogadore High School graduate, where she participated in the track and field team for all four years. Additionally, she has been deeply involved in Girl Scouts since the first grade.
Region IV
Elyan Gregory is studying human biology at Michigan State University with the goal of becoming a physician assistant. He is the son of Wesley and Elthea Gregory. His father is an electrician with DTE and a member of Local 223. Elyan graduated from Groves High School in Beverly Hills, Michigan, where he excelled in varsity track and field and soccer. He ranked among the top 10 state hurdlers in both his junior and senior years.
Region V
Logan Kettelman, son of Gary and Jenny Kettelman, is a freshman at Delta College in Stockton, California. His father, Gary, is the former president of Water Local 160. Logan is an honors graduate of Lodi High School, where he was an active participant in the varsity track and field team, specializing in the long and triple jump events, and was also involved with the Future Farmers of America. A dedicated Boy Scout, Logan earned his Eagle Scout designation this past summer. Additionally, he holds a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo.
