UWUA congratulates Matias Alejandro Vergara for receiving a 2023 Union Plus scholarship. He is the son of Alejandro Vergara, secretary-treasurer of California Local 283. Matias is a sophomore at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) pursuing the study of computational biology. His career goals include furthering the understanding of minute biological processes and enhancing the ability to harness them to do good for others. He is a 2022 graduate of the California Academy of Mathematics and Science High School in Long Beach.
Union Plus awarded $200,000 in scholarships to 205 students representing 41 unions this year. Scholarship recipients include university, college, and trade or technical school students from 39 states and the District of Columbia.
