In May and June members of Local 601 put together three fundraisers to benefit the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay For Life, a national program that has been adopted by towns across the country. Local communities join with ACS fundraising teams, named for people whose lives have been impacted by cancer, and find creative ways to raise money to fund research to eliminate the disease — and have fun while doing this important work.
In Rahway, NJ, Local 601 members teamed up with Freda’s Fighting Warriors and Yvette’s Dream Team to organize and sponsor three fundraisers. On May 21 UWUA families gathered to “Strike Out Cancer.” They sponsored bowling lanes at two sessions of the day’s event, enjoying bowling, food and drink, games and a raffle of gift baskets, donated by sponsors such as Local 601, Wegman’s, Target and Kent Jewelers.
On June 4, they held two additional fundraisers: Afro Beats and Plant, Paint and Sip. Between the three events, Local 601 families raised $4,271 for the ACS, the second highest of the 27 teams that took part in the Rahway chapter’s Relay For Life.
