For the many thousands of residents without power in the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey, nothing has been more eagerly anticipated and appreciated than the arrival of utility workers – those round-the-clock heroes who will restore power to their homes, their neighborhoods, and their lives.
We have received reports from our members of the many gestures of gratitude from communities throughout Florida and Texas, but one particularly touching example came from the Swistak family of Boca Raton. Journeyman Lineworker In Charge, Dave Grace of UWUA Local 150 out of Kalamazoo, Michigan, was formally presented with a homemade thank you card and doughnuts from the entire Swistak family.
In another example of support, a Florida resident and utility customer saw a post from one of our UWUA lineworkers who was celebrating his 34th wedding anniversary while on storm restoration for hurricane Irma. The customer contacted his wife and Local President to coordinate a meeting. The customer presented the Lineworker with a thank you package and FaceTimed his wife into the meeting.
We are so proud of our UWUA members from locals across the country that have mobilized in support of these hard-hit communities in Florida, Texas, and elsewhere. They are proving once again, UWUA members are the safest, most productive, highest skilled workers in the world.
Below are some of the amazing pictures sent to us from Dustin James of UWUA Local 258, and Ben McCrumb of UWUA Local 123. Both are part of the Consumers Energy crews servicing communities in and around Boca Raton, Florida. Also featured is a wonderful picture from UWUA Local 369 crews, out of Boston, helping to get Disney up and running again in Orlando!
