New Jersey House Resolution 452

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO applauds Congressman Donald Payne for introducing House Resolution 452, which recognizes the essential role organized labor plays in uplifting all working families. We thank Congressmen Rob Andrews, Rush Holt, Frank Pallone, Jr., Bill Pascrell, Steve Rothman, and Albio Sires, for co-sponsoring this resolution.

In these times when workers are under constant attack, these representatives are standing up in support of our union values. Recent history has shown that by undermining collective bargaining we weaken the middle class. Collective bargaining allows workers to bargain for a living wage, safe working conditions, and health and retirement benefits. Unions serve as a voice not only for their members, but speak out on behalf of all working families, winning reforms that benefit the entire community. The labor movement serves as a means to promote civic engagement, ensuring worker representation not only on the job, but in government from the national to local levels.

Presently the middle class is critically unrepresented and unions must be a part of the solution to restore balance to our economy and strength to our middle class.

In Unity,

Laurel Brennan, NJ AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer
