Utility Workers Union of America System Local 102 responds to Allegheny Energy plans to merge with First Energy
|
Utility Workers Union of America, System Local 102 raised caution in response to plans announced today by Allegheny Energy to merge with First Energy. Local 102 represents 1,100 Allegheny employees in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. "I want to assure our members and all Allegheny employees, who continue working around the clock since Friday’s storm, that we will ensure this merger must be in the best interest of customers, employees, and shareholders,??? said Robert T. Whalen, President, UWUA System Local 102. "Many of our members have been working sixteen hour shifts in the poor weather conditions to restore power to our customers, despite not having power in their own homes. Our Union has always advocated for non-represented employees along with our members to provide a safe working environment and improve working conditions." Today’s announcement is an obvious distraction to all System Local 102 members and Allegheny Energy employees throughout the Company while facing the challenges of restoring electric service to customers. System Local 102 members have always been committed to responding to our customer’s needs in difficult times. The Utility Workers Union of America currently represents approximately 2,000 members at First Energy who are employed as physical, clerical, call center, and professional workers.
