Utility Workers are Joining the Women’s March on Washington!

On January 21, 2017, tens of thousands of people from across the country will gather in Washington, DC to send a message to the incoming administration that women stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, safety, health, and families.

The Women’s March on Washington originally began as an ad hoc event organized by two women on Facebook days after the election. Within a couple of weeks, it had evolved into a mass action led by National Co-Chairs Bob Bland, Tamika D. Mallory (formerly of National Action Network), Carmen Perez (The Gathering for Justice), and Linda Sarsour. The march will feature a rally, with appearances by prominent leaders, musicians, and celebrities, followed by a march from the Capitol to the White House.

Women workers want to be sure their voices are heard and the AFL-CIO Executive Council Committee on Women Workers is working to share information with and coordinate efforts for participation in the event. Our UWUA Women’s Caucus co-chairs, Valerie King & Ursula Grant, have participated in early planning conference calls.

The event is being held the day after the Inauguration and it is expected that most participants will arrive and depart the same day by bus. Any UWUAmembers (male and female alike) that are interested in participating can obtain the most up to date information and details about the event at www.womensmarch.com. In addition to the DC event, numerous local “Sister Marches” are also being held the same day and information about those are also available on the website.

Please share this information with your fellow members and encourage participation as interest and availability permit. All efforts should be coordinated through the Women’s March website and questions and concerns can be directed to the event organizers per below.

For general inquiries, email info@womensmarch.com. For inquiries directed towards local organizing, please contact Evvie Harmon, evvie@womensmarch.com

If you would like to participate at the national event or any of the local “sister marches,” we would ask that you let the National know and submit information about your participation and photos, if possible, to Deb York (dyork@uwua.net).

Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

UWUA National Officers and Staff
