Helping Cool the City, on a 128-Degree Floor (July 13, 2007) (login required)
For those who whined about the hot weather yesterday, try changing an oil filter with Jeremiah F. O'Shea. More than halfway through his 12-hour shift yesterday, Mr. O'Shea, 56, an operating mechanic at Con Edison's East River Generating Station, unbolted a thick steel cover. His red face was already sopping wet. His lips were pressed together as he heaved the cover off the filter basket. His light blue button-down shirt had taken on a darker hue around his shoulder blades, and near his open wrists. Thin cotton gloves protected his hands. The cover was 112 degrees, 20 degrees above the high in Central Park yesterday. And things were about to get even hotter. Read more>>
