Oppose Puzder for Labor Secretary!

Sign the petition
petition-against-puzderConfirmation hearings for Puzder are set for January 12th, and we must tell our representatives that he is an unacceptable choice to enforce our nation’s labor laws!

Puzder is against an increase in the minimum wage. He’s opposed to expanding overtime pay. He supported replacing working people with machines. And of his company’s restaurants that were investigated for labor law complaints, 60% were found to have violated the law. Most of these complaints were for failure to pay workers minimum wage or overtime.

Tell Senate Republican leaders to do their jobs and fill the Supreme Court vacancy

Sign the petition
Senate Republican leaders are refusing to do their jobs. They are vowing that they won’t allow hearings or a vote to happen in the next year to fill the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy created by the passing of Justice Antonin Scalia—even though it’s their constitutional duty to do so.

Take action: Sign the petition now and tell Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Republican leaders to get to work and quickly confirm a new Supreme Court justice.

TPP will hurt working families

Sign the petition
The Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, was written in secret—largely by corporate lobbyists—to expand the profit margins of international corporations. They’ve called it the most progressive trade deal in history, but corporate gains under this deal will not translate to gains for our workforce or more jobs. Working families shouldn’t have to suffer so that we can give corporations special giveaways.

Take action now! Fill out the form to sign the petition asking the U.S. International Trade Commission to fairly and honestly evaluate the economic impact of the TPP on working families.

Fast Track heading back to the House Floor for Vote

On Friday, the House voted against part of the Senate’s version of the bill, and the overall bill failed. This was a major victory in the mission to defeat Fast Track, but the House is taking up Fast Track again, and it could come to a vote as soon as today. Please email your Representative to ask them to oppose Fast Track when it is voted on the House Floor, or call your Representative now. Fast Track proponents are moving quickly and now is the time for action. Take action by emailing or calling now to contact your Representative today. Remind them that they represent the American middle class, not corporations.

Fast Track means new secretive NAFTA-like trade deals, such as the TPP, without any debate or amendments. We can’t let them get away with outsourcing more jobs and undermining our economy. Fast Track legislation is undemocratic and trade deals should not be crafted behind closed doors.

Future trade deals should protect U.S. jobs, not destroy them. Fast Track legislation allows multinational corporations to shape trade deals to their advantage, and shields the details from the public and policy experts alike.

America cannot afford another bad trade deal. Tell your Representative to oppose Fast Track!

10 Facts About Fast Track:

  1. Costs Jobs: Trade policies adopted under Fast Track have cost us more than 1 million jobs and contributed to the shuttering of more than 60,000 factories.
  2. Benefits the 1%: Fast Track ensures that trade policies are made by and for multinational corporations and the wealthy, making income distribution even more unequal and making it harder to get a raise.
  3. Undermines Democracy: Fast Track doesn’t allow adequate public scrutiny of trade deals while they are being negotiated, and permits only a simple up-or-down vote—no amendments.
  4. Gives Power to Corporate Lobbyists: Fast-tracked trade deals almost always include rights and privileges to foreign investors that our home-grown businesses don’t even have.
  5. Prevents Amendments: Fast Track doesn’t allow our representatives to amend trade deals, no matter how problematic some provisions might be.
  6. Permits Foreign Currency Manipulation: Current Fast Track legislation doesn’t require trade agreements to contain adequate provisions addressing currency manipulation.
  7. Neglects Jobs: The current Fast Track legislation doesn’t include negotiating objectives on job creation, reducing the trade deficit or protecting “Buy American” policies.
  8. Lowers Access to Medicines: The current Fast Track legislation includes objectives that would interfere with the ability of governments to ensure the provision of affordable, life-saving medicines.
  9. Hurts the Environment: Previous trade deals negotiated under Fast Track have weakened environmental protections.
  10. Offshores Jobs: Current Fast Track legislation promotes U.S. participation in “global value chains,” which is shorthand for offshoring production to places with weak labor and environmental laws and enforcement.

STOP THE TRANS-PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP (TPP)!

The Obama administration is negotiating a 12-nation trade deal called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), also known as NAFTA on Steroids. The White House is urging Congress to pass Fast Track legislation to push through the TPP.

The assault on the middle class continued last week as Congressional lawmakers introduced “Fast Track” trade legislation to give President Obama the power to move trade pacts quickly by preventing members of Congress from amending them.
Corporate interests have so far successfully kept labor and environmental rights off the table in the secret TPP negotiations.  If they succeed in continuing to do so, they’ll control everything from rights at work to the prices of prescriptions and even toy safety.Ironically, January 1, 2014 marked the 20th anniversary of the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) which has resulted in the loss of more than 1 million U.S. jobs, record income inequality, and mass displacement and instability in Mexico. Two decades of experience has provoked overwhelming public opposition to NAFTA-style trade deals that do not include labor and environmental protections.

The Obama administration is seeking this so-called “trade-promotion authority” to make it easier to enact trade deals as negotiations continue over the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), involving 11 Pacific Rim nations, and another deal with the 28-nation European Union.

National Labor Relations Board Appointments

  • Give Us 5 NLRB Members This Week Share President Obama’s appointments to Federal Departments such as the Consumer Protection Agency and the National Labor Relation’s Board have been stalled in the U.S. Senate. The power to make these appointments is a normal and constitutionally mandated action by a sitting President. U.S. Senate confirmation is required. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and its allies have exploited outdated Senate procedures to make it virtually impossible for the Senate to confirm President Obama’s agency and judicial nominees. We are asking UWUA members to contact their Senators now to demand action and support new rules so that qualified nominees can get to work.

  • Yours In Unity,
  • In regard to the National Labor Relations Board, the Senate must confirm all 5 positions in the next several weeks or the NLRB will be completely vacant and workers will lose all protections. Cases are being put on hold, leaving workers without remedy when they are fired illegally, or when their employer refuses to bargain.Reports indicate that Senate leadership is seriously considering passing new rules that prevent the obstruction of qualified nominees. But they will only take this bold action if we constituents demand action.

Working people need and deserve a confirmed NLRB now!  Without a fully operational Labor Relations Board, who will working people turn to when their rights are violated?

    Yours in Unity,

    D. Michael Langford
    UWUA National President

  • Take Action Now:
  • As these nominations will be reviewed shortly, right now – today – we need each and every one of you to contact your U.S. Senators, both Democrat and Republican, and urge them to immediately confirm these nominations.
  • President Obama has nominated a package of five individuals to serve on the National Labor Relations Board.  It is essential that the U.S. Senate act promptly to confirm these individuals in order to keep this important agency operational to protect workers’ rights.  Presently, two of the five seats on the Board are vacant, with the term of a third member expiring in August.  Without action by the Senate, the Board will soon be left without the quorum required for the Board to function.  In addition, a recent decision by the DC Circuit Court on President Obama’s recess appointments to the NLRB has greatly undermined enforcement of the law as cases are being put on hold, leaving workers without remedy when they are fired illegally, or when their employer refuses to bargain.
  • Brothers and Sisters,
  • Michigan We Need You
    Dear Working Family Activists,

If the Michigan legislature passes proposed changes to election laws, many legitimate voters will have a much harder time making their political voices heard. Our state legislature is currently considering a set of bills that regulate groups that register voters, impose stricter photo ID requirements for voters and add a citizenship check-off box to ballot applications.

Click here to send an e-mail to your state representative and your state senator now. Tell them to stand up for voters by opposing SB 751, SB 754 and SB 803.

Even the Secretary of State acknowledges that voter fraud is not a problem. In response to a recent audit, the Bureau of Elections said, “In every instance, where it appears that a deceased or incarcerated person voted and local records were available, a clerical error was established as the reason for the situation.”

The Michigan State AFL-CIO, the A. Philip Randolph Institute and many diverse organizations oppose these bills because they will make voting more difficult and confusing, without improving election security or integrity.

New training, certification and paperwork requirements will make it more difficult for groups such as the A. Philip Randolph Institute to conduct registration drives, resulting in fewer opportunities for citizens to register at locations such as schools, community centers and places of worship.According to national data, Hispanic and African American voters are twice as likely as white voters to register through voter registration drives and, therefore, more likely to be adversely affected.

Click here to take action now. Together we can defend democracy in our state.

    In Solidarity,

    Anita Dawson
Michigan President of the A. Philip Randolph Institute
