29th Constitutional Convention Coverage

UWUA’s 29th Constitutional Convention a Huge Success

Shaping Our Future, Building Our Industries

uw-09-11-solisUnder the banner of “Shaping Our Future, Building Our Industries,” 344 Delegates, 92 Alternate Delegates and 186 guests representing 150 UWUA locals gathered in Las Vegas June 22-25 to set a course for the union for next four years.

“It’s time to put our boots on and do what it takes to take our nation back for the working men and women who make it so great,” said Mike Langford, UWUA president in his opening remarks. “We’re going to do whatever we can here to save working families.”

That set the tone for what proved to be a highly energetic four days of intense work to move the union forward by mobilizing members, rebuilding the middle class, and stopping the war on workers. The convention is the highest policy-making body of the union, with the power and authority to elect National Officers, modify the Constitution, and set policy.

In addition to re-electing the National Officers by acclamation, delegates deliberated, discussed, and passed 22 resolutions to guide the work of the union going forward.

A number of prominent international and U.S. labor leaders addressed the convention, as did pro-labor politicians, TV and radio personalities. Their remarks focused on beating back the attacks on workers’ rights to organize and bargain collectively by corporate-backed politicians, particularly at the state level.

Rank-and-file member participation in the proceedings was at an all-time high as delegates also heard recently organized, young, and veteran members alike present their victories.

The proceedings were streamed live by The Union Edge radio and the union’s website provided regular updates, interviews and more throughout the entire convention. Go to www.uwua.net for complete coverage of the historic convention.
