2018 UWUA Regional Conferences — REPOWERING AMERICA
This year’s UWUA Regional Conferences are designed to empower and educate, as well as learn from, our Union’s membership. The conferences will include speakers from politics, labor, and a variety of experts, all designed to inform and hear from, the working men and women of our Union.
The conferences will offer a number of workshops to help members sharpen their skills, and make them more effective advocates for themselves and their fellow workers. Learning opportunities will include:
1. Labor Law 101 – Understanding and Exercising Our Rights
David R. Radtke, UWUA General Counsel, Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO
This workshop will assist participants in understanding the protections under Federal and State law that are the source of our workplace rights. The workshop will also provide information to help ensure that UWUA Locals follow the applicable labor laws in dealings with their employers and members. The workshop is designed to be interactive and participants should come prepared to ask questions and share real world experiences with other attendees.
2. Effective Contract Campaign Planning
Steve Wyatt, Labor Consultant – Leadership, Education & Development, LLC
What makes an employer say “Yes”? What will you do if they don’t say “Yes”? In addition to your bargaining strategy, you may need a public campaign and support from external groups such as consumers, community or political leaders. This workshop will: (1) develop a one-year timeline of actions to develop external support; (2) identify potential points of leverage that can help win a fair contract; and (3) explore opportunities to engage your members in the fight to win the best possible contract.
3. Offensive Bargaining
David A. Rosenfeld, Union Labor Attorney Weinberg, Roger & Rosenfeld
The Offensive Bargaining presentation will discuss bargaining with dif cult employers who want to bust the Union, achieve major concessions, or avoid a first agreement. The presentation will outline some of the legal issues and provide some effective tactics to make the bargaining table an effective weapon, avoid impasse, create unfair labor practices and help the Union achieve a fair contract. The presentation is based upon David Rosenfeld’s book, entitled “Offensive Bargaining” which will be provided to participants.
We look forward to seeing you at the regional conference and REPOWERING OUR UNION!
