5 January 1914 - The Ford Motor Company raised its basic wage from $2.40 for a nine hour day to $5 for an eight hour day.
5 January 1970 - Joseph A. Yablonski, unsuccessful reform candidate to unseat "Tough Tony" Boyle as President of the United Mine Workers, was murdered, along with his wife and daughter, in their Clarksville, Pennsylvania home by assassins acting on Boyle's orders.
